For me, it’s a tie between red velvet cupcakes and any sort of Asian noodle dish.

For a friend of mine, it’s chocolate-covered pretzels.

For another friend, it’s fried dumplings.

The downfall food.

That one food that, when it’s right in front of you, seems to totally speak your language.

You get a sinking feeling when you see it or smell it - because you already know how this ends.

It’s the food that you can’t imagine NOT eating or not finishing.

How do you make peace with it?

No one wants to live in a world where red velvet cupcakes are off-limits forever, right? (I know I don’t…..)

So what do you do when you’re really trying to lose weight and be healthy - but you find yourself confronted with your downfall food and you’re feeling weak?

Here are my top two suggestions:

1. Eat It.

Yeah - that’s right. I said eat it. Nothing will kill a ‘diet’ faster than the feeling of deprivation. It makes you overindulge out of rebellion - but, more importantly, it makes you feel so incredibly BAD.

Try this little trick that always works for me: Tell yourself that you are ‘allowed’ to eat the whole thing - whatever it is. I know that might seem scary - and insane - but if you give yourself full permission to have whatever you want…..sometimes you end up not wanting it. If you know you can eat the whole thing - sometimes just one bite is enough.

2. Don’t Eat It.

Make the choice not to eat it - but be careful that you are choosing your GOAL (whatever it is) and not self-punishment or deprivation. For example, instead of saying to yourself, “You can’t have those fried onion rings because you’re still too fat to fit into your skinny jeans,” try saying instead, “I choose to keep creating my lean, healthy, strong body - and fried onion rings are not going to help me get there right now”.

See the difference?
