The Right Way To Stay Motivated: Part Three.

Print Friendly and PDF The Right Way To Stay Motivated: Part Three.

Aaaaaand, we’re back with the third and final installment of my 3-part series on motivation.

If you’re just finding your way here - hello, and welcome! You can read parts 1 and 2 of the series right here:

Read Part One.

Read Part Two.

These don’t need to be read in order, but it’s worth reading all 3 parts at some point, if staying motivated is a struggle for you.

OKAY. Let’s get to it.

We’ve been talking about the 3 different ways that your Motivation Mojo can get sapped.

First we talked about how it can be too easy to confuse comfort with pride.

Then we talked about how sometimes we forget (oops) our own motivation.

And, today, we’ll talk about the third way you can lose your motivation mojo, and that’s BOREDOM.

You Get Super-Bored And Lose Interest In Your Goals.

I get really bored. This one usually sounds like this: “I don’t know….I start off really strong and motivated, but then…after a few weeks I just lose interest. It gets really boring and annoying to have to think about healthy eating all the time. I just zone out”. Okay. Two things here.

  1. This line of thinking tells me that you may have externalized your healthy habits. It is as though this healthy eating THING is just something that you’re doing for a while, instead of being an integrated part of who you are and how you live.

  2. This line of thinking also tells me that you may be burdened with the wrong idea about how healthy living and weight loss actually happens.

Let’s start with the first thing.

Healthy eating must become WHO YOU ARE.

I am doing this cleanse. You should totally do it with me.Ever do a cleanse?

Ever do a 30-day detox, or a 6-week re-boot, or any kind of regimen like that?

Whatever kind of program it was, it was a “thing” that you did for a while. You were excited about it.

You told anyone who would listen about this cool, healthy ‘THING’ that you were doing at the moment.

You told everyone that they should toooootally try this THING with you, too.

And then it was over.

And you could go back to the way you normally eat.

Sure - you may have had a new awareness, and you may have carried some of the cleanse/detox/regimen principles with you moving forward - but, all in all, that cleanse/detox/regimen was just a “THING” that you were doing for a short while.

It was an INTERRUPTION in your regularly scheduled life, as opposed to being an integrated part of who you are.

Motivation Overhaul: No more ‘things’.

Health is fun. Diets are not.Health is fun. Diets are not.

Please don’t diet. Please?

Diets, cleanses, detoxes, re-boots are a short-term remedy for a long-term life.

A diet gets tedious and boring.

A diet can feel laborious - like it’s just too much hassle.

A diet can separate you from yourself and draw a damaging line between who you are - and how you eat.

The way you eat, the way you care for yourself is an expression of who you are.

So ask yourself: Who do you want to be?

As a general rule, we tend to take good care of the things we care about - and so, when you care about yourself, you feed yourself properly.

We take good care of the things we care about. And it’s not boring. It’s not just some ‘thing’ that you do for a while.

It’s who you are.

It’s loving. It’s energizing. It’s fun!

If you find yourself losing interest in healthy eating - I urge you to look beyond food for the solution. Consider who you want to be in your life, and how you want to treat your body. Think of the bigger picture.

The Second Thing.

I reached my goal weight, and then I lived happily ever after! There’s this common misconception that once you start eating healthy and reach your goal weight, you will live happily ever after and all your dreams will come true.

There’s a myth that you will never have to think about this stuff again, that it all happens magically on its own, and your healthy lifestyle perpetuates itself with no further thought or effort on your part.

And when that DOESN’T happen for you, and when you discover that, in fact, you have to continue to make healthy choices over and over and over again - forever - it can be a bitter, bitter pill to swallow.

What a rip-off.What a rip-off, right?

Why bother doing all this work to get trim and fit, if you’re going to have to keep working at it forever.

But think about that for a second.

You’re alive.

You are a thinking, breathing, growing, changing person - gifted with a physical body.

Is it realistic to expect that there is a major piece of your existence - your body and your health - that will not require your ongoing attention and participation?

How does this sound: “But I just had my teeth cleaned at the dentist. You mean I’m going to have to keep brushing and flossing every day…..forever?” It sounds silly, right?

Of COURSE you have to keep taking care of your teeth. You notice the ill effects if you go even one day without brushing!

You are alive.By the same token, of COURSE you are going to have to keep thinking about what you eat every day - and making smart choices.

Of COURSE you are going to have to keep exercising and being mindful of your calories.

You’re alive!

MOTIVATION OVERHAUL: Be Alive.

Be alive. Show up. Recognize that your health cannot be outsourced. It begins and ends with YOU.

This is GOOD NEWS - because it puts you squarely in control.

But if you’re still seriously bummed out because you were hoping not to have to deal with this health stuff ALL the time for the rest of your life, I have two things to say to you:

#1. It gets easier. #2. Get over it.

  1. It does get easier the more you do it. Think about how hard it was to drive a car when you first learned. There was so much to think about, and it felt very challenging just to stay in your lane. But, the more you practiced, the more it became second nature. Now you can drive with one hand, while singing to Adele and listening to your GPS.

  2. Ya kinda have to…..get over it. You’re here. You have a body. You have a life. It’s your job to stay invested in yourself and make the choices that will bring you longevity and vitality - not just for your own enjoyment, but for the people in your life who will suffer if you’re not living up to your healthiest potential.

I sincerely hope you have enjoyed this series on motivation - and I am wishing you boundless health and success!
