Healthy Habits Spotlight: Christy Morgan – The Blissful Chef

by Nicole Burley

Health begins in your mind – not your mouth. Every week I ask the same 5 questions – and shine a spotlight on how different people think about health.

Ummmm…..how do I put this? I adore Christy Morgan and her recipes. I cook from her cookbook, ‘Blissful Bites’ at least once a week. And, though we have yet to meet in person (we keep getting thwarted!), she’s become a Twitter Buddy who I am very happy to know. I hope you will be, too!

Christy Morgan – The Blissful Chef

Also known as The Blissful Chef, Christy Morgan shows you how to make healthy, delicious meals—without animal products and without a lot of effort. Her first book, Blissful Bites: Vegan Meals That Nourish Mind, Body, and Planet, has over 175 inventive recipes that work with seasonal produce and multiple diets (including raw and gluten-free). She contributes to MeatlessMonday.com, One Green Planet and other websites and has been seen in VegNews Magazine, on Martha Stewart Living Radio and Good Day Fox 4. She teaches regular vegan cooking classes showing both amateurs and seasoned veterans how to make meals that nourish mind, body, and spirit. What does ‘healthy’ mean to you?

To be healthy is to experience life to the fullest free of disease, physical pain and stress, to feel empowered to make good food choices, but also having fulfilling relationships and compassion for all beings. I’ve gotten really into fitness lately, so healthy means moving my body each day and loving my body.

What are your specific reasons for wanting to stay healthy?

It just feels better to be healthy. I feel like I can be a true expression of myself and have the energy to do all the things I want to accomplish in my lifetime. My mission is to help others. In order to fulfill this mission I must keep myself healthy. Many people say that life is too short to not eat x or be restrictive, but I always say if you eat healthy now then life isn’t so short! I’d rather have a higher quality of life for a longer period of time than dig an early grave with my fork. After almost 10 years of being vegan I don’t feel deprived in the least and my health improves with every passing year.

What is a simple healthy habit that you practice every day?

I try to eat greens at every single meal, even breakfast. They are full of vitamins and are so good for you! If I’m eating out and the entree I want doesn’t have greens I will order a side of steamed broccoli or get a salad. I think everyone could benefit from this simple habit of eating greens at every meal or at the very least eat them everyday.

How do you handle ‘cravings’ – or those challenging moments when you don’t feel like making a healthy choice?

When I’m eating well I don’t have many cravings. Foods that are not good for us keep us in a mode of craving more things that aren’t so good for us. Sugar is one of the most addictive foods and it’s in everything. After going off sugar at the beginning of the year, it took about a week to no longer crave it physically. It is the mental cravings that have me reaching for chocolate or pastries. I know that it will make me feel good (for a short amount of time) and that it tastes good. So what I do is make my own healthier desserts with natural sweeteners and whole grain flours and try to stay away from packaged food.
I honestly want to make the healthy choice 98% of the time. When I have a craving for something in particular I try to make a healthier version of that food. When I eat out in restaurants I may eat something a little naughty but I make sure to get some greens or a salad to balance it out.

Name one ‘health’ food that you used to think was weird – but now you love it!

Before I started culinary school and eating healthy I never imagined I would have green smoothies or green juice on a regular basis. Now I can’t imagine living without them and I’m thankful that more juice/smoothie bars have popped up all over the country.
